Rose

Habitat:  Prairies, pastures, old fields, and open woodlands.

Growing season:  Middle of spring through summer.

Characteristics:  Usually less than 2 feet.  It has pink petals and almost round leaves with jagged edges.

Uses:  Medicine and food.  Some roses are said to have as much vitamin C as an orange.  They can be made into jam and the petals can be made into jelly.  If the petals are fresh they can be eaten raw or candied.  The leaves of the rose can be crushed and made into tea.

Folklore:   The latin phrase sub rosa which means in secret is now translated as under the rose.
