FAMILY:  Poppy                                                             SPECIES: Canansis

NICKNAMES: Puccoon and Sangdragon                        HABITAT: Rich woods

SIZE: 6 to 12 inches tall                                                 GROWING SEASON: March to May

IDENTIFICATION:  Bloodroot has orange juice in the stem.  It has 8 to 10 petals.  It is white and has a yellow center.  The flower is 1 1/2 inches wide and opens in the morning and closes at night.

USES:  It helps to keep the bugs away and to help coughs and colds.  It cures skin diseases and also is used to dye clothes.  American Indians used it for war paint.

FOLKLORE:  People say it helps snake bites.
