Smartweed is four to five feet long. The
stems are usually red
in color. The leaves are long and narrow,
and the underside of the leaf is
white. The flower is white to a pinkish
color. The flower blooms between
July through September. The flower is 1/6
inches long together in clusters
of 1 and 1/2 to 7 inches long. The seed
from the flower is a dark brown or black in color. You can find the Smartweed
in wet prairies, swamps, ponds, lake shores, and quiet streams. The American
Indians called the Smartweed a leaf tea. They used it for a folk remedy
for fevers, chills, and it was put on a child's thumb to prevent sucking.
