Lotus

The lotus is found in lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams. It looks like three different plants, but it is one plant. The American Lotus is a close relative to the Eastern Indian Lotus. The lotus is also known as the Yellow Water Lily. It has yellow flowers and leaves that stand on  2-3 feet tall stalks.

Lotus plants are found in groups. One lotus bed in Grass Lakes, Illinois stretches over 50 miles. Some more beds are found near New York City, Southern California, and in the valleys of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. Did  you know that there are 80 species of lotus? Some names are the Sun Lotus and Banana Lotus.

It blooms from spring to summer.  The lotus produces small fruits that are the size of a seed. The fruit is edible.
