Joe-pye Weed

The Joe-pye weed is a member of the aster family with purplish  flowers on the head. The joe-pye weed is a perennial herb. This means it can grow year after year from its roots. It can be  as tall as 60 cm to 200 cm with one or several stems. It has a purple spotted stem.

You can find joe-pye weed in sedge meadows, wet meadows, and shallow marshes. It is found in southern Canada and northern USA.

Joe-pye weed, when crushed, has a vanilla scent. An old folklore says that an Indian "Joe pye" used this plant to treat typhus.
