Peanuts

The peanut is the fruit of a peanut plant which is a legume. It originated in South America but is also found in Africa, Asia, and the southern part of the United States. They need a lot of sunshine to grow and do the best in soil that is not rich. They usually take 3 - 3 1/2 months to grow. Some grow straight and some spread over the ground. They are unusual because once the flower is fertilized, it buries its tip in the ground where the peanut grows. Some plants can grow up to 2 1/2 feet tall or spread more than 4 feet. After they are harvested the large peanuts are often roasted and the small ones are used for peanut butter or oil.
Peanuts are good for you and are high in energy. They contain about 20 - 30 percent protein and are a good source of vitamin B. Peanut oil is used for salads and cooking, and even used in soaps.
