OIL PALM
photo:credit 35

The oil palm is grown in the rain forests of Western Africa. Large numbers of trees grow together to make groves. The trees can reach a height of 55 feet which is as big as some trees in Wisconsin. They produce large bunches of fruit, sometimes up to 200. Each fruit is about ten inches long and is usually red orange.
The fruits have different kinds of oil in them. Palm oil comes from the outer part of the fruit. It has a lot of uses but is mostly used in soap, shampoo, and cosmetics. Palm kernel oil is pressed from the inside kernels and is usually used to make margarine.
