Avocado
credit 14
Do you know what an avocado
is? Have you ever eaten one? It is a fruit that grows in Mexico,
Central and South America. It is called the alligator pear because
it looks like a pear and is a greenish color.
It has thick skin and is usually 5
inches long. The buttery flesh that surrounds the seed is 20 to 30 percent
oil. The avocado belongs to the laurel family which includes cinnamon,
camphor, and sassafras. The avocado is used in salads with mashed spices.
It also is used in soap and cosmetics. It makes a great moisturizer for
hair.
The fruit of an avocado takes 9-15
months to mature. The avocado starts growing two to three years after
planting. It has a buttery and faint nut-like taste when ripe.
