Macaws are the largest birds in the parrot family.  Most of them live in the  Amazon rain forest. There are 17 different species and they vary in size.  The largest is the hyacinth macaw of Brazil and Bolivia which gets to be 100 cm.long.  The smallest one is the red shouldered macaw which is 30 cm.long.  They are very colorful.  The most common colors are blue, yellow, and scarlet.
Zoos want macaws and many people want them for pets.  Many are shipped illegally to different parts of the world.  Because of this and loss of their habitat, many species are endangered.
