The Howler monkey can be found in Central and South America. It is known for its roar which can be heard up to two miles away. The bone that supports its tongue is large and hollow, and opens into its wide voice box. Together they provide two huge chambers for producing the sound. Howlers lives in groups of 10 to 30 and communicate by howls.Whoever howls the loudest, gets more space to live in and more food.
The howler is the largest and heaviest of the American monkeys. They can weigh from 12 to 20 pounds and reach a length of three feet .The black face is bearded with long black hair in the adult. The body is covered with thick fur except for the back part of the tail which the monkey uses to swing from branch to branch. The best known howler is the red howler that has a metallic red face and is shown above.
Howlers eat mostly leaves and fruit but will also eat insects and seeds.
