Fox River

The River was once a major military route, with Fort Howard at the Green Bay end, Fort Winnebago in the middle at Portage and Fort Crawford at the Mississippi end. In the town of Eureka, there is only one remaining lock on the Upper Fox River. The remainder have been removed and hand operated haulovers have been installed. On the Lower Fox River there are 17 lift locks and 2 guard locks which have a minimum width of 35 feet, a minimum length of 144 feet and a minimum depth of 6 feet. The United States maintains a minimum channel depth of 6 feet from Lake Winnebago to De Pere and a channel depth of between 11 and 24 feet from De Pere to Green Bay. There are 12 dams and 17 locks in the Lower Fox River. There is alot of industry and agriculture in this area. This is the largest area of pulp and paper mills in the world. The watershed area is over 6600 square miles.
