History

Green Bay was named when the first French explorer, Jean Nicolet landed on the tip of Green Bay in 1634. The Winnebago Indians that lived in this area were surprised to see this Frenchman in a silk robe as he fired his pistols in the air. Nicolet claimed the area for France and named it La Baye Verte (the green bay) because of the greenish waters.

A fur trading post was built at Green Bay because the Fox River connected to Lake Winnebago. It was a short portage from the Fox River to the Wisconsin River and eventually on to the Mississippi River. That's what created the "River Highway" in Wisconsin. This made it easy for the indians to bring their furs to the trading post.

The French fort was built in 1701, it was called Fort Frances.

After the French an Indian War, the English took over the fort and called it Fort St. Francis. In 1816 an american force under Colonel John Miller sailed into the Bay and took comand.

Green Bay is the largest city in the Fox River Valley. It also used to be one of the largest fur trading posts in the state. People used to think of paper mills when they came to Wisconsin, now they think of watching the Packers play.

It is the oldest city in Wisconsin.

Industry

In 1831 a Green Bay man built a sawmill on the Wisconsin River, by 1847 there were 24 sawmills on the Wisconsin River. Green Bay is located on Lake Michigan which makes it an important port in Wisconsin.

Coal is shipped in and out of Green Bay The coal is used in the factories in Green Bay.

Ships from other countrys use Green Bay as a port. Green Bay is an excellent place for shipping goods on train, truck, ship, or airplane. Green Bay used to be known for its very large paper mills.

A large part of Green Bays income comes from the Green Bay Packers. The Packers got their name because of the large meat packing company in Green Bay.

Green Bay is home to the meat-packing company Packerland Packing, the largest meat-packing company east of the Mississippi River.

The largest employers in the area include the Oneida Tribe of Indians, American Medical Security, and Fort Howard Paper. Green Bay is known as the "toilet paper capital of the world".

Tourism

The main tourism in Green Bay is being the home of the Wolrd Champion Green Bay Packers. Many people rush to Green Bay to visit the Packer Hall Of Fame and Lambeau Field.

Fishing is also something people enjoy doing in Green Bay. Many people take chartered boats out into Lake Michigan to fish.

The Mountain Bay Trail is a 93 mile biking, hiking, cross country skiing, and snowmobile trail that runs through Green Bay.

We all know Green Bay because of the Packers, everyone like to go and watch the Packers play football.

Facts

Green Bay is located in the southern part of the bay in eastern Wisconsin. It is in Brown County near Lake Michigan.

The Fox River runs into Green Bay. The port of Green Bay is the 12th largest international seaport on the Great Lakes.

The oldest house in Wisconsin was built in 1776 by Joseph Roi, an early French Fur Trader. Its name was Tank Cottage.

Wisconsin's first newspaper, the Green Bay Intelligincer was sold in 1833.

The 1966, 1967, and 1997 Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers was organized by Curly Lambeau in 1919.
