History

The area that is now Milwaukee was once the hunting grounds for the Fox, Mascouten and Potawatami Indians. Downtown Milwaukee was once a swamp. The first immigrants to Milwaukee were French traders and trappers.

Milwaukee was started by three white men, Solaman Juneau, George Walker, and Byron Kilbourn. Solaman Juneau developed Juneautown on the east bank of the Milwaukee River. Byron Kilbourn made Kilbourntown on the west bank. These towns developed into Milwaukee. Milwaukee's name came from the Potawatomi Indian which pronounced it Mahn-ah-wauk which means "great council place".

When Milwaukee became a city in 1848, Juneau became the first mayor. Juneau wanted to see the city grow and prosper so he donated land and buildings for families and businesses that were coming to the city.

Ships began making regular stops in the harbor, bringing immigrants from Europe by the thousands. The city grew into a large industrial city and an important trading center.

In 1836 the first Milwaukee courthouse was built on what is now Cathedral Square. Additional offices and a jail were added a few months later.

Milwaukee's industry included flour and grist mills because of all the wheat in the Milwaukee area. The flour mills were run by the local water power.

Tourism

Milwaukee has many interesting sites to see.

Milwaukee's baseball was the Milwaukee Braves at one point, when the Braves left to Atlanta many fans were mad. Milwaukee is famous for there breweries so they named a baseball team after that The Milwaukee Brewers.

The professional basketball team for Wisconsin is the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Great Circus Parade is something that everyone in the family will enjoy.

The Milwaukee Zoo is one of the best zoo's in the world. At the zoo you can see different animals all over the world.

Industry

Milwaukee is famous for it's beer. Milwaukee owes a thank you to the first early German immigrants because they built some of the breweries in Milwaukee. Miller Beer's main office is in Milwaukee.

Milwaukee is also home to Harley Davidson, a company that makes motorcycles.

The professional sports teams bring in many jobs for the people in the Milwaukee area.

Being on Lake Michigan, the harbors and the trading are important to the economy of Milwaukee.

Milwaukee is the largest city in Wisconsin.

Located in southeastern Wisconsin on Lake Michigan.
