Wisconsin has three main professional sports teams. They are the Green Bay Packers (football), the Milwaukee Bucks (Basketball), and the Milwaukee Brewers (baseball). They are all FANTASTIC teams! Our teams have lots of fans that come to their games or watch them on television. Professional sports bring lots of money into Wisconsin.
Wisconsin also has many other professional sports teams even though some are not very well known. In baseball, we have the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers which is a minor league affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, the Beloit Snappers which is a minor league affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, and the Madison Blackwolfs which is in the Northern League of Pro Baseball. In football there are the Milwaukee Mustangs of the Arena Football League. There are also hockey (Milwaukee Admirals and the Madison Monsters) and soccer (Milwaukee Wave and Milwaukee Rampage) teams.

The Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl this year, 1997. They won the first two Super Bowls, too. The first Super Bowl was in Los Angeles, California and the Packers played the Kansas City Chiefs. At this time the Green Bay Packer coach was Vince Lombardi. Today the Packers are coached by Mike Holmgren. Our favorite players are Brett Favre, Reggie White,Robert Brooks, Doug Evans, Edgar Bennet, Dorsey Levins, and Mark Chmura.
The Green Bay Packers are the only football team to be city owned. They were named after a meat packing company which had the first franchise. The meat packing gave the team franchise to the city of Green Bay in 1922. Curly Lambeau was the Packers first coach and Lambeau Field, where they play, is named after him.
The Packers were once the best team in the world and we think they still are today.

The Milwaukee
Bucks
began playing in Milwaukee in 1968. People in
Wisconsin were happy to have a basketball team again. The Milwaukee
Hawks basketball team had played here but moved to the city of St.
Louis in the 1950's. The first year the Bucks played here they came
in last but had lots of fans come to their games to cheer them on.
In 1969, the Bucks signed Lew Alcindor to be a player. He signed a five-year $1.4 million contract!! He was good. One time he scored 80 points in a game. He helped the team and they went from last place to second place the next year. Lew Alcindor changed his name and today he is known as Karrem Abdul-Jabbar.
That was the start of the Bucks. Today our favorite players are Glen Robinson, Vin Baker, and Ray Allen.

In 1953, Milwaukee got a baseball team from Boston called the Boston Braves. They became the Milwaukee Braves and people in Wisconsin were very happy they were here. The Milwaukee Braves won the National League pennants in 1957 and 1958. In 1957, they even won the World Series. Then they started to lose games and people didn't watch them as much. In 1965, the Braves moved to Atlanta and are now known as the Atlanta Braves.
In 1970, a baseball team who played in Seattle, Washington, came to Milwaukee to play. They were the Seattle Pilots, but are now the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers did not do too well from 1970-1977. Then they started to get better.
